Regional Workshop on Greenhouse Gas Emission Projections in Macedonia

We are happy to announce that RIPAP and TAIEX are organising a three day Regional Workshop on Modelling systems and tools for preparing Greenhouse Gas Emission Projections. The workshop will be held in Skopje, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, between 14 and 16 May 2018. The venue will soon be announced.

The European Union has recognised that long-term decarbonisation of the economy requires long- term planning. EU Member States are obliged to prepare greenhouse gas emission projections in line with Regulation 525/2013 on a mechanism for monitoring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions. The proposals tabled by the Commission on Energy Union Governance will further integrate climate and energy planning. The workshop will provide participants with an overview of the modelling tools that can be used to prepare long term projections and can serve as a basis for evidence-based policy making aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It will also serve as an excellent opportunity for sharing knowledge and experience on climate and energy policy planning between the EU and project beneficiary countries.

The aim of the workshop is to build capacity in beneficiary countries to implement national systems for inventories, projections and policies and measures in line with Articles 6, 13 and 14 of Regulation 525/2013. This will contribute to wider climate policy objectives related to the implementation of medium and long-term EU climate goals as well as the implementation of the Paris Agreement. This workshop is focused on supporting the beneficiaries in developing their National Systems for projections. These National Systems provide the basis for the immediate and long-term development of national climate strategies, effective and efficient policies and measures, and tracking progress. The specific objective of the event is:

  • Learning about EU climate policies and measures and their key provisions related to climate policy development process and Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) requirements;
  • Sharing experiences of the beneficiary countries and EU Member States; in the preparation of projections and,
  • Networking of climate policy-making practitioners in the region and the EU.
