Multi-beneficiary Regional Workshop on Data Needs for Modelling Energy Sector Projections

The workshop will be held on 19-20 September in Tirana, Albania. It concentrates on the Identifying climate policies and strategies to support the implementation of IPA beneficiaries' commitments under the Paris climate agreement component of the RIPAP.

As such, its focus is on building capacity for increasing data availability for preparing greenhouse gas emission projections for the energy sector. The energy sector is understood here as covering all sectors where greenhouse gas emissions originate from the combustion of fossil fuels. It, therefore, includes emissions from fuel combustion in the electricity and heat, industry, buildings and transport sectors, inter alia. The workshop will focus on the different data needs for modelling emissions from these sectors.

Making sure that data which serves as input to energy and greenhouse gas emission projections of National Energy and Climate Plans are available and reliable is often a challenge in RIPAP beneficiary countries. The project is, therefore, organising a first workshop which will provide an overview of data needs for preparing energy sector projections, the legislative and procedural background necessary for making sure that data is available, and data collection procedures.

The specific objective of the event is:

  • Sharing knowledge and experiences on climate and energy policy planning in the EU and RIPAP countries;
  • Providing an opportunity to learn from EU member state experience;
  • Exploring a wide range of practical support such as data sources and tools for energy and emission projections; and,
  • Networking of climate policy-making practitioners in the region and the EU.
